- Call for 2FDN mini-projects:
The federation provides funding for collaborative development projects in neutron science (instrumentation, data analysis, methodology, etc.). Priority will be given to development projects that best serve the French community through the instruments associated with the 2FDN. Projects must be carried out in collaboration with a member of the 2FDN. If this is not possible, the 2FDN should be contacted to arrange the most appropriate collaboration. Collaborations between multiple sites are encouraged.
The executive committee will allocate any funding in early July 2026, with the aim of making the payment or purchase before the summer, if possible.
Format of propositions: title, name(s) of proposers, 10-line abstract, description of the request (2 pages max), budget, quotes.
The deadline is June 30th 2026, by simple email to federation.neutron@neel.cnrs.fr.
- French national neutron scattering days 2026 (JDN)
For its 34th edition, the Neutron Scattering Conference will take place at Domaine Lou Capitelle, near the picturesque village of Vogüé in the Ardèche region, from October 5 to 8, 2026. The conference will focus on soft matter, condensed matter, magnetism, biology, the environment, and instrumentation. The nuclear fuel cycle will be the focus of a special session during the conference. For information and submissions, click here.

We would like to draw your attention to (at least) four mini-symposia organized by our colleagues, focusing on “large-scale instruments”: MMM01 (physical chemistry of colloids: the legacy of Jean Perrin), MMQ01 (quantum magnetism), MMQ03 (strongly correlated electronic systems), and SD4 (in-situ/operando studies of materials using X-rays or neutrons). The European Spallation Source (ESS) and the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) are organizing the ESS-ILL User Meeting 2026, which will take place from November 18 to 20, 2026, in Lund, Sweden. The program will focus in particular on the role of neutron scattering in addressing major scientific and societal challenges. More information is available here.

- We propose two new access tracks to beam time:
- The night of the neutrons (experiments under standard conditions on SAM and SANS-LLB) : no deadline, simply send your proposition in one paragraph with essential information: samples, chemical composition, possible risks, to federation.neutron@neel.cnrs.fr.
- Full proposals (rolling call): There is currently beam time available on several instruments, typically for 1 or 2 experiments: D1B, SAM, SANS-LLB, and IN22 (in CPA). We are opening a rolling call for proposals for these instruments. If you submit before June 30, measurements should be in July. And before July 31 for measurements in the fall for D1B and IN22. Submission via Phoenix for SAM, D1B and IN22 and by e-mail to federation.neutron@neel.cnrs.fr for SANS-LLB.
Scientific highlight of the month
Probing the Mechanism of Lithium Extraction within a Solid-state Battery in Real Time
How do lithium ions actually move inside a solid-state battery while it charges? For the first time, a team of researchers from the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), the LRCS (Amiens) and ICMCB (Bordeaux) have watched this process in real time using neutron diffraction, the only technique sensitive enough to track lithium deep inside a thick, working battery. Their findings reveal unexpected structural complexity in the electrode, and point the way toward smarter battery designs.

- The CNRS announced a Junior Professorship (CPJ) call, including:
- A CPJ entitled Expériences Innovantes sur les Nouvelles Sources Neutron Pulsées (InnovSON) , aimed at developing research activities that highlight the unique capabilities of neutron scattering. Two host laboratories are possible: Laboratoire Léon Brillouin (LLB) in Saclay and Laboratoire de Physique des Solides (LPS) in Orsay.
- A CPJ entitled Physique expérimentale pour les matériaux amorphes (MatAmorph), focusing on experimental research on amorphous materials. The position may be hosted in one of the following four laboratories: Laboratoire Surface du verre et interfaces (SVI) at Aubervilliers, Institut de Physique de Rennes (IPR), Institut de Minéralogie, de Physique des Matériaux et de Cosmochimie (IMPMC) at Paris, and Laboratoire Charles Coulomb (L2C) at Montpellier.
