News

The SFN and the 2FDN wish you a wonderful summer! Don’t forget to register for the Neutron Scattering Days by 13 July!

  • Journées de la Diffusion Neutronique 2026
For its 34th edition, the Journées de la Diffusion Neutronique will take place at the Domaine Lou Capitelle, near the beautiful village of Vogüé in the Ardèche, from 5 to 8 October 2026. The conference will focus on soft matter, condensed matter, magnetism, biology, the environment and instrumentation. The nuclear fuel cycle will be the focus of a special session during the conference. Information, registration and submission of contributions here.
The deadline for registration and abstract submission is July 13, 2026.
  • Calls for proposals: fast-track routes!
The 2FDN is offering two new ways to access beamtime:
    • Neutron Night (experiments under standard conditions on SAM and SANS-LLB): rolling call; please send a one-paragraph proposal containing the following essential information: name(s) of sample(s), chemical composition, and any potential risks to federation.neutron@neel.cnrs.fr.
    • Rolling call (full proposals): there is currently time available on several instruments, typically for 1 or 2 experiments on D1B and IN22. The 2FDN is opening a rolling call for proposals for these instruments. Please submit your proposals by 31 July for autumn measurements. Submit via  Phoenix.

Toroidicity as a route towards non-volatile quaternary memory in antiferromagnets.

Researchers from the ILL, the CEA and international partners have, for the first time, demonstrated a quaternary non-volatile memory in a bulk antiferromagnetic material, the orthophosphate LiNi₀.₈Fe₀.₂PO₄. Using spherical neutron polarimetry, they identified and controlled four distinct magnetic domains using electric and magnetic fields. This approach exploits toroidal structure to pave the way for spintronic devices with high storage density and low energy consumption.
